Have you heard of the book “Pilgrims Progress” by Paul Bunyan? In the classic book, Pilgrim works through many problems to grow in his faith and to obtain a right relationship with God. This spring we are working on a cabin renovation to become the Wixson retreat. It really is a lot like rebuilding a life. We first had to remove the old foundation that was prone to shifting and warping. We then set it on a firm foundation that would stabilize the building through the freeze and thaw of a New England year. We have repaired sagging support studs, replaced drafty windows and removed inefficient wiring. There was a lot of deconstruction before we could really put in the new items that will make the retreat comfortable and safe. It always takes longer than we like, but like Pilgrim, we are making progress. I’m glad the book wasn’t called “Pilgrims Perfection” as that is an impossible goal on this side of eternity.
There are times I feel that my life is more falling apart than leading to construction. God uses these times for renovating parts of my life that cannot be simply “painted over.” God is concerned with the foundation of my life, the supporting structure around it and that the wiring is correct and safe. Like us with our building, the building needs to be sound, not just look good from the outside. As spring projects begin around your home and church, don’t forget to take the time for personal “building projects” as well. If you need a place for reflection and peace, Gove Hill is here to provide you with the start you need.
